Entering the Opal Fields of Coober Pedy at dusk The red rock and barren landscape of the opal fields. Distant mounds, like large ant hills

A miner uses divining rods in search of opal beneath the surface. Not all miners are superstitious, but this man swears by this technique.

A prospecting drill is prepared to drill a hole so miners can get a sample of the material beneath.

Material brought up by the drill is sifted through in search of opal. No luck this time.

This machine is called a "blower". The large bucket extending from the truck acts as a vacuum, bringing material up from the bottom of a hole so it can be looked over for opal.
