The History Behind “tying the knot”
Over 2,000 years ago in ancient Greece and Rome, the Hercules knot represented a feminine rite of passage from maiden to married woman. On the morning of her wedding day a bride was dressed by her mother. The wedding dress was fastened around the waist with a band of fine white wool tied with a Herculean knot (tying the knot) which only the husband was privileged to untie.
Hercules was the guardian of wedded life. His knot symbolized the strength of a couple’s union in marriage. The sacred knot, once loosened by the husband, was for good luck, that he too, like Hercules, would be fortunate to be blessed with many offspring.
