Why Cross Jewelers is so Deeply Involved in Maine Tourmaline

Cross Jewelers has been a part of Maine tourmaline history since the early 1900's, when Mr. William Cross, our founder, began pursuing a personal interest in gem cutting. As he worked to perfect his technique as a gem cutter, he cut and polished beautiful green tourmaline from Mt. Apatite, near Auburn, Maine. Many of the gems he cut were fashioned into pins and rings of the period, and were created in his manufacturing jewelry shop here in Portland.

Today, we are still creating jewelry from William's private store of these almost-emerald-green Maine tourmaline, as over 2,600 carats of green crystals remained untouched in the vault for over fifty years after he passed away in 1931.

It was the outstanding quality of the 1972 Plumbago Mountain tourmaline though, that prompted our designers to begin creating a major collection of jewelry featuring Maine tourmaline - the official gemstone of the state of Maine. Today our collection is maintained at more than 700 pieces of Maine tourmaline jewelry in a wide range of styles and designs. Part of our fascination in working with Maine tourmaline is the unique nature of each gem, making every piece of jewelry truly special.

What is a Portfolio?
This portfolio is a snapshot of a portion of our Maine tourmaline collection as of 1996. Many of these pieces we are still making and are available. Some of these designs are one-of-a-kind and once sold will never be available again. Because this is a portfolio, review the styles, select several possibilities, then give us a call.

Scale
For scale: print this page and lay an American penny beneath the picture. The outside diameter of the penny is approximately the outside diameter of the ring.

About Pricing
All prices were current as of 1996. Prices on replacements are likely to be higher. Call for availability and confirmation of current pricing. As time passes and pieces are recreated, weights and grades of gems can vary and thus subsequent pieces and prices may vary from our printed price guide. Because of the unique color of Maine tourmaline, the color may also vary on subsequent pieces. Part of what makes Maine tourmaline special is its very individual color.

Finger Size
Most of our rings are a size 6 1/2. We recommend you receive your selection in the existing size. This allows us to ship your selection immediately and gives you the opportunity to be certain you and the recipient are thrilled with the design. After presentation, we will be delighted to change the size for you.
