Moonstone Ring
The Philosophers Stone

Our ancestors were moon watchers. The rhythm of love, romances, and reality were governed by the phases of the moon. A moon ½ full to full was when important socials were held, especially in farm country because you and your horse could see where you were going on dark country roads. Back in the 1800s, moonstone was the rage because it represented the lovers’ moon.

Today, fine, really really fine moonstones are rare. A large clear moonstone like this is exceedingly rare. A nice moonstone is a mystical stone because a blue spot seems to simply float above the gem.

You Can See the Living Soul of the Gem

The phrase “once in a blue moon” spoke of the rare event of two full moons in a calendar month. The moon does cast a blueish light. The blue glow is seen especially well in the winter above snowy fields. Moonstone can occur in several shades. Blue is the best, and crystal clear is the most rare and most desirable.

This is a blue moonstone because it has an apparition of blue light, which hovers at the crest of the gem and moves ghost-like across its surface as you move or as the gem moves. This phenomenon allows you to see the living soul of the stone as light drifts through. The gem’s life rising to the surface hoovers at the stones highest points.

This mystical phenomenon allows you to drift deeper into the gem, encouraging you to slow and to truly feel the flow of time.

Moonstone
The Philosophers Stone

The Philosopher’s Stone of history had two duties. First, to change silver into gold. They never made it work. They tried everything…never happened. The other power of the philosopher’s stone was second sight. Here we go deep into ancient Scottish Celtic lore, which says that some gazing into a moonstone can see the future with certainty in the space between the blue light hoovering at the top and the clear gem below.

Some call it clairvoyance, some foresight, others say sixth sense, while others simply say extra sensory perception. It is being able to see far enough forward to see authentic new beginnings. That is the gift of a fine moonstone.

Why we Love this Ring

It’s simple. Big gem center moonstone. Little gems, little diamonds in the wings. Clear like a crystal ball. Blueish-white light floating on the surface. Sits low, close to the finger. It’s smooth to the touch and comfortable to wear. Looks awesome on the hand.

I’m a Moon Watcher

I’m a moon lover. I’m a moon watcher. I have tide charts. I know when the moon is full. I know when high tide is coming. I walk the beach at high tide under a full moon. I watch the waves reach the high, high sands. Piping Plovers and Least Terns that nest on the beach grass on the high beach must be extra careful under the full moon. Our boats ride high at the dock on nights with a full moon. I listen to the sounds sea water makes as the tides rise high.

Moonstone is magic. Fine, gem-quality moonstone is rare. And while we find moonstone in several places along our coast of Maine, it’s the gems found in India that are the best. Moonstone is nature’s crystal ball. It’s actually better. If crystal balls could, they would be made of moonstone. No natural moonstone has ever been large enough. Why is this gem magical? Because it possesses a phenomenon called adularescence. It glows with a blueish white light and has a ghostly aura of blue that seemingly floats above the gem. Its hovering blue-white glow challenges the eye because you, the wearer could easily be convinced that the light is floating, hovering above like a ghostly Will o’ Wisp. Here is the effect it will have on you, the wearer. You will gaze, you will dream, you will feel an otherworldly calm come over you, every time you look at your ring. I’m going to say it straight out, it will calm, it will settle, it will lower your blood pressure. Possessing, owning a ring like this is a healthy thing to do.

Now on to our own reality check. Could we make a dozen of these rings? No! Could we make 6? Probably not, and certainly not within a year. This size, this quality is simply too rare. This is an exquisite gem, so rare only a select few pieces will ever be made in any year.

There are many other gems for jewelry where we can make 6, 20, 100, and do easily. Moonstone, not so. In exquisite quality there are just a few moonstones in the world today. If you feel tempted, don’t wait, because if the one that you’re considering sells it could be 6 months or a year, or two…and then because of rarity maybe never…Don’t wait.

The Gull Ring

Gull’s nest on the sheer cliffs of Whitehead on Monhegan Island. Standing at the top with an expanse of endless blue ocean beyond, where gulls glide on updrafts, it’s a rare view on the coast of Maine…to be standing above flying gulls. The Gull ring has a blue-moon moonstone center, and 6 brilliant white diamonds on the outstretched wings. The ring feels as free as the gulls soaring above the cliffs.

The Gull is one of our classic Trade Wind designs. When we find a just right-gem it’s often a candidate for The Gull. You’ll love the understated simplicity of any gem we set into our Gull design.

Moonstones in Maine
A Secret Beach

Ten, fifteen years ago I told my staff where Moonstone Beach is. No one was paying attention. That’s good because after we cut and polished a moonstone from this beach and then set it in white gold and surrounded it with diamonds everyone wanted directions to this secret beach.

It’s best no-one knows, so I don’t say, and I won’t tell. If the world knew, the beach would be overrun and forever changed.

I will be going back one of these days, to one of the two places in Maine I know where moonstones roll in the surf on sunny days and beneath star-filled skies on moonlit nights. I’m tempted to bring my row boat to go out beyond the breakers for a night row. No one knows where these beaches are. I was sworn to secrecy by a jeweler friend. His motives were noble. He said, “Tell no-one. If they knew, people would come for the wrong reasons. They would stop seeing the ocean, stop seeing the waves on the shore. Adults would take over beach activities. Kids would be pushed aside.”

Here is the irony; kids already know there are gems on this beach. I’ve been there summer days. Kids are good scientists. They are close to the earth. They know things. They tell their parents about what they are finding. I listened in those three days that I was at Moonstone Beach as armies of fourth grade scientists were explaining to big people what was there, in rocks and mineral gems and gold and silver*. The kids might as well have said, “I just caught a two headed sea serpent, can I take it home?” Their parents humor them. The parents come to this beach oblivious to what’s really there. I have found gem garnet, pink tourmaline, and moonstone. I suspect the kids know more than I do.

So yes, when I go, I’ll bring my row boat, slide it out of the pickup, slip it into the sea one calm clear night at high tide when the moon is full, to row in Moonstone Cove. To glide over a tide-filled Moonstone Beach where hundreds of moonstones roll in the sands beneath the waves.

Nothing of what I have just said should give you reason to consider owning this ring. This moonstone is not from Maine, but rather from India. The moon and moonstone is about power and pull, the give and take of our nearest celestial neighbor. The moon is about time and tides. The average human lifespan is 78 years which means we live a thousand full moons.
