In the 18th and 19th centuries, Madeira was the most prestigious wine in the United States. It was shipped to connoisseurs in major seaports from New Orleans to Boston. The color of the wine is burgundy, a rich, deep red classic wine color. The wine was transported from Portugal’s island of Madeira. Did it come to America by Clipper Ship? Perhaps!
Why We Love Rhodolite Garnet
Red garnet has been known for hundreds of years. The Romans mined garnet in Germany and cut gems there. The color was dark; it was an inky red. It was called Pyrope Garnet. The jewelry business didn’t really like Pyrope Garnet because it was too dark and not pretty. Truth, I didn’t like Pyrope Garnet either because it was too dark; it sucked up too much light.
Then, there was a discovery in Africa of another garnet called Rhodolite. It was a pinker red, a light red that allowed light in, allowing light to reflect and refract. Rhodolite was actually pretty. Rhodolite did things that allowed light to sparkle within.
Rhodolite is not common, even with this new discovery. It costs more than darker garnets do…but it’s worth it. Keith, on his two-month visit to Southeast Asia, is always looking for nice African Rhodolite. When he finds a great gem he brings it back to New England and makes a piece of jewelry featuring this gem.
