Greek goddesses from 300 BC coins, rich sculptural detail front and back.

A.  Hestia (Vesta) Goddess of home and hearth. Goddess watching over family, representing permanence and security. Coin description: front shows Hestia. The back of her hair held in an ampyx (a type of hair headband) also wearing in her hair a wreath formed of grapes and grape leaves. She is wearing earrings and a pearl necklace. The reverse shows Hestia wearing a long gown seated on the stern of a galley. The original coin was minted during the third century BC on the Greek island of Eobia, northeast of Athens.

B.  Artemis (Diana) Goddess of the hunt and the moon. Goddess of childbirth, protectress of the young, presiding over the important transitions in a woman’s life. Represents solitude, wildness, self-sufficiency, and mystery. Coin description: front, head of Artemis, hair pulled back. Quiver at left shoulder. She is wearing no jewelry. Reverse shows fore part of stag kneeling, head turned back to palm tree on left. Bee to right of stag. The original coin was minted between 280-258 BC in Ephesus, Ionia (on the western coast of Turkey) under Greek domination.

C.  Persephone (Proserpina) The goddess of spring. Daughter goddess, goddess of the netherworld, who’s return heralds the coming of spring, the awakening of the earth, and the blooming of sweet fragrant flowers (daughter of Demeter). Coin description: front, head of Persephone is shown with ribbons in her short hair. She is wearing dangle earrings. The reverse shows a stalk of wheat with a mouse in one of the leaves. The original coin was minted between 350-330 BC in Metapontum, southern Italy while under Greek domination.

D.  Aphrodite (Venus) The goddess of love, beauty, and sensuality. Aphrodite symbolizes love which unites all, the vital cosmic force which permeates every aspect of nature and creation. Aphrodite is an immediate and divine power, self-giving of warmth and truth, harmony and grace. Coin description: Aphrodite’s hair is held in an ampyx, a type of hair headband, visible above the forehead and holding up the back of her hair. She is wearing drop earrings and a pearl necklace. On the reverse side is the head and foreleg of a lion, lion’s open mouth, protruding tongue within an incuse square. Original coin was minted in Cnidus, Ionia (Turkey), 387-345 BC.

E.  Demeter (Ceres) Mother goddess, represents devotion to her child, the fertility of the earth. Demeter is the keeper of the seasons, the goddess of culture, cultivations, and harvest. (mother of Persephone). Coin description: front, head of Demeter, medium-long curly hair wearing triple dangle earrings. Reverse, a stalk of wheat. The original coin was minted between 305-280 BC in Metapontum in southern Italy under Greek domination.

F.  Athena (Minerva) Goddess of wisdom and craft. Goddess of success in battle. Representing the logical, self-assured woman who is strong, intelligent, accomplished, judicious, and fair. Athena II Coin description: front, shows head of Athena wearing a Corinthian helmet. She is wearing no jewelry. The reverse shows Pegasus. The original coin was minted 345-317 BC in Syracuse, Sicily while under Greek domination.

G.  Hera (Juno) Goddess of weddings and protector of marriage. Hera represents absolute commitment and fidelity. Coin description: front, head of Hera, hair rolled. She is wearing dangle earrings. Reverse shows an eagle (symbol of Zeus) carrying a snake in its talons and beak. The original coin was minted between 340-294 BC on the Greek island of Eobia, northeast of Athens.

How Cross Came to Make the Goddess Bracelet

Working with private collectors of antiquities over a 10-year period, we sought to acquire some of the most beautiful goddess coins of ancient Greece. We focused on a 150-year time frame from 400BC – 250BC within the classical period of Greece. This century and a half was the time in history in which the most beautiful coins ever minted came into circulation. Once our collection was assembled we used the originals as masters, re-oriented front with back to allow coins to hang properly with erect images. The coins were also reduced slightly to eliminate unnecessary weight and to allow for a pleasing visual progression. Only the most beautiful depictions of the goddesses were chosen. Special consideration was given to centering the coin’s imagery and selecting coins free from wear. Also important in our selection was to find coins with a reverse of rich imagery and symbolic importance to each goddess. All reproductions in this collection are clearly stamped “copy”.
